Exercise 5: Cutting Calls – Create Excitement and Trigger Gobbler Responses
2m 36s
In this episode of Call the Wild, we focus on cutting, an aggressive and high-energy turkey call that can fire up a gobbler and provoke a strong response from both toms and hens. This exercise is designed to help you develop better control over your cuts, allowing you to string them together smoothly and incorporate them into your calling sequences for a more dynamic and effective approach in the field.
Cutting relies on the same front-of-the-mouth technique as clucking but requires more air pressure and tongue control. The key is to start with a sharp, single cut, ensuring clarity before adding more. Once that foundation is built, you can gradually increase the number of cuts, working up to a series of four to six for a more natural and fluid rhythm. This approach helps you gain control over the call while keeping your cuts sharp and precise.
This call is an excellent way to get gobblers excited and responsive. A fired-up gobbler is more likely to move toward your location, making cutting an essential tool when trying to trigger a strong reaction. Beyond attracting toms, cutting can also provoke a territorial response from hens. If a dominant hen becomes agitated, she may approach aggressively, bringing the gobbler along with her. To enhance realism, mixing cutting with excited yelps and clucks can create a lively, convincing sequence that keeps birds engaged.
While cutting is a powerful tool, it’s important to read the bird’s response and adjust your calling accordingly. Overuse, especially at close range, can sometimes give away your position or make a wary gobbler hesitate. If a bird goes quiet, a well-timed cutting sequence can reignite the action and draw him back into range.
With consistent practice, cutting can become a high-impact addition to your turkey-calling skills. Focus on building strong, sharp cuts, increasing control, and blending them into your sequences for the best results.
