Cutting Calls: Create Excitement and Trigger Gobbler Responses
3m 42s
In this episode of Call the Wild, we dive into cutting, one of the most exciting and effective turkey vocalizations. Cutting is all about urgency, excitement, and agitation, making it a powerful tool to grab a gobbler’s attention or even stir up a competitive hen. This call differs from a cluck because it is sharper, more intense, and demands an immediate response. Unlike a soft, relaxed cluck that signals contentment, cutting is a burst of high-energy sounds that say, “Come here now!”
To produce the cutting call, you’ll use the same mechanics as a cluck but with increased air pressure and volume. The call is created at the front of your mouth, requiring sharp, deliberate movements to form quick, irregular bursts. The key is to string multiple clucks together in rapid succession, varying intensity to match the scenario. Practicing this technique will allow you to create a convincing cutting sequence that can be highly effective in the field.
Cutting is especially useful for firing up gobblers and getting them to respond when other calls aren’t working. It can also be used to locate turkeys by striking a reaction from distant birds. Another powerful use of cutting is triggering a hen’s aggression. If a gobbler is henned up, cutting can make the dominant hen territorial and defensive, often causing her to approach—bringing the gobbler with her. Cutting can also add realism to your calling sequences, especially when mixed with excited yelps to create the impression of a lively, vocal hen.
This high-energy call is versatile and works in various hunting situations, from striking distant birds to creating excitement at close range. Whether you’re challenging a gobbler or competing with a hen, knowing how and when to use cutting can make a significant difference in your success. Keep practicing, focus on controlling your air pressure and rhythm, and watch how this technique elevates your calling game.
