The Kee Kee Run: A “Key” Turkey Calling Technique
3m 13s
In this episode of Call the Wild, we break down the kee kee run, a high-pitched vocalization commonly used by young turkeys, including jakes before they begin gobbling. While not always the go-to call, the kee kee run can be an effective tool for adding realism to your calling strategy and drawing in curious birds. Often heard in the fall, this call signals curiosity and location, making it useful in certain hunting scenarios when trying to attract groups of turkeys.
To produce the kee kee run, a bat wing-style diaphragm call or similar mouth call is ideal. Positioning your tongue on a groove in the call helps control airflow, while consistent air pressure creates a sharp “kee kee kee” sound. Adjusting air pressure allows you to control volume and pitch, making the call more versatile in different situations.
This vocalization can be even more effective when combined with yelps, creating a more natural sequence that mimics real turkey behavior. Developing a strong kee kee run not only improves diaphragm control but also refines overall turkey-calling skills. Even if it’s not your primary call, having it in your arsenal increases your chances of success by making your calling sound more authentic.
Perfecting this call takes practice. Finding the right tongue placement and maintaining control over the diaphragm are crucial for consistency. Experimenting with different air pressures helps vary the intensity and realism of the call, ultimately making it more effective in the field.
The kee kee run can become a valuable addition to your turkey-calling repertoire with repetition and refinement. Stay tuned for more expert tips in future episodes of Call the Wild by Slayer Calls!
