Exercise 4: Kee Kee Run Control – Building Precision in Your Turkey Calling
2m 32s
In this episode of Call the Wild, we take a hands-on approach to refining the kee kee run with a focused exercise designed to improve diaphragm control, air presentation, and overall turkey-calling ability. This drill helps build muscle memory, allowing you to execute the call with confidence in the field.
The first step is finding the high note by using a bat wing-style diaphragm call or a similar mouth call. Identifying the "sweet spot," typically on the cut side of the call, and directing airflow over that area creates a sharp, high-pitched kee kee sound. Once the high note is established, the next step is controlling and repeating the call. Proper air presentation and throat control help sustain the kee kee run, and repeating the "kee kee kee" rhythm ensures precision and consistency.
To enhance realism, the kee kee run can be combined with yelps. Start with a kee kee run followed by a single yelp, then gradually build up to adding two or three yelps. This variation creates a more natural calling sequence that can be highly effective in the field. The exercise strengthens control over air pressure and diaphragm positioning, making transitions between calls smoother and improving overall calling versatility.
Consistent practice is key to refining this skill. Finding the sweet spot, locking in muscle memory, and repeating the exercise regularly will lead to a more natural and effective kee kee run. Taking the call out of your mouth, resetting, and repeating the sequence ensures consistency in real hunting scenarios.
By committing to this kee kee run drill, you’ll develop better control over all aspects of your turkey calling, setting yourself up for success in the field. Keep practicing, and stay tuned for more expert tips in Call the Wild by Slayer Calls!
